I am from Ukraine and studied in the Russian/Ukrainian school system my entire life. On average, American students are about 3-4 grades behind Russian students upon graduating High School. US School system is based on mass production, meaning, the requirement of a teacher is to make material available to all students equally. It doesn't mean the quality of the material is good. We reduce the amount of subjects so every kid would graduate equally. That's not the case in Russia and Ukraine. Although first 4-5 years are strictly based on memorization, it is in the 6th grade where classes are moved toward figuring things out and using logic. Most of Russian students start studying Physics and Chemistry in 6-7 grades. These aren't the subjects of pure memorization, it simply doesn't work this way. By the 9th grade, students complete trigonometry and part of calculus. Calculus is an AP class in US system and not available to an average of bellow average student. American kids do not learn languages at all. Not to mention the fact that first language class starts in High School, sometimes you'll see a language offered in 8th grade. By European standards, it is too late tot each a child a language. A foreign language class in the US does not even focus on grammar and pronunciation, but focuses on the culture and traditions. This makes absolutely no sense at all. The middle school is a drag out of elementary school. A science class is a mess as it includes all of the subjects (bio, chemistry, physics) into one and most of the time kids are confused and do not understand anything at all. It is only in High School the subjects are broken into science majors like Physics and Chemistry, etc.

I don’t where you are getting your information from, but they teach languages in the US. They teach Spanish and French to elementary school students. Learning about the culture of the country is a way to teach students about a culture different from their own. What is wrong with that?

Actually, I did graduate in Bulgaria where the educational system is really similar to the one in Russia (due to communistic affiliations and intellectual exchange of ideas and people during the communism between both of those countries) and I can say several things. 1) in reality the curriculum is really comprehensive but also completely ineffective. In both Russia and Bulgaria you study with one single group of students and you can’t change this groups for the rest of your school degree. Basically, all of you study with the same teachers, and follow the same school schedule. 2) Science is baffling theoretical scheme of concepts you just have to memorize , especially in Bulgaria. Here, Chemistry and Biology are more like History: you just memorize and then complete a “topic tests”. Topic test is a test assessing you on just a single unit from the textbook which you have to be able to restate in the exact same way it was written in the textbook on a piece of paper for limited time and in severe test conditions. 3) Here you have non-specialized and specialized education where you study more “complex science” in comparison to the general curriculum. You specialize at the age of 12-13 (yes they literary assume that at the age of 12 you are already knowledgeable of what you are going to work and apply to university with). However, if you decide to study something different then the science you’d chosen as your “specialized subject” in later period of your education... then you’re actually fucked up. And believe me after 3 years of severe teachings in just one or two "specialized", "advanced" subjects you’ll most likely think differently then your 13 years old self. 4) Russians are scientific realists. If you check what’s the philosophical meaning of this term you would probably grasp the reasoning justifying why this is not really the most pleasant attitude towards science in academia in USA. In General, Bulgarian and Russians do not see science as united field but rather something completely disconnected and fragmented in fields of concrete specialization. 5) You do not study how to do proper research in Russia neither Bulgaria. The concept of scientific community is really voguish for Russians and Bulgarians and the reasons for that should’ve become quite clear by now: 1) they were told for the whole of their lives that their “single special science” is the fundamental truth and nothing else counts. 2) and due to the validity of statement number 2 every chance of possible cooperation between different departments is not so likely to happen.

I agree whit everything you've written, during the social ear of the country when we were close to the soviets the things were the same if you having difficulty such as mental or otherwise you're basically tossed out of the system and nobody cares if you're in class or not, however, when I moved into the US from Germany all those years ago my child was having problems too whit the material and was put in such class whit the same level of the other students that was till 5 grade when he did start to gasp more into the material everything went ok. However, one of my friends has the same problem whit their child, mental difficulty, and the teachers are disinterested at all, whatever it succeed or not.

I'll tell you about our schools, but in exchange, can you tell about your schools? Well right now im in 10 grade. You learn in school for 11 years(but you can go to college, or work after 9 grade), than you pass ЕГЭ (Single Goverment exam). After Exam you can go to university. From 1-4 is "Primary"(?) from 5-11 is "Secondary/High" School.(By the way, we dont have only High schools or only primary schools, we have single school in which you learn from 1 to 11 grade.) I will tell you list of lessons i have: 1.Algebra. 2.Geometry. 3.Physics. 4.Russian Lang. 5.Russian Literature. 6.History of Russia. 7.World History. 8.Chemistry. 9 Biology. 10. Man Law Society(about laws) 11.Geography. 12.Informatics.(work with computer) 13.English. (in my school we also learned German) 14.Technology.(boys learn how to work with tools, girls learn to sew and cook.) 15.Physical culture.(sport) 16"NVP" (Primal Military preparation)(Learning how to march, dissasembling guns(AK), and other(Ffter 18 every man(an exception is disabled people) in Russia must serve in army, for one year. School preparing us for this)). Also we had this lesons in previous grades: 1.Drawing. 2.Music. 3.Drafting.(drawing schemes of buildings, tools, and other things that engineer need to know) Marks. We have 4 marks: 5 - Excelent 4 - Good 3 - Satisfactorily(not so bad, but bad) 2 - Bad!!! Very bad!!! (In USSR, schools also had 1 mark. which was the worst). Society. We have classes(not rooms). One class genereally consist of 20-30 people. This people learn together from 1 grade. So you will learn with your friend fromfirst1 grade to the last. P.S: I could forgot to write some lessons, but i think i wrote the general of them. (also sorry for grammar, im still study English). P.P.S: I like my school))

Oh! Also after 9 grade you can choose direction of education: Humanitarian - you have more lang, Literature lesons and etc. or Phys-Mathematic - you have more Physics, Mathematic and other "exact science"(?) lessons.

Okkkay. I live in America, I will tell you about our educational system (btw your English is fantastic). We go to mandatory school for 13 years, 7 hours a day, 5 days a week for 180 days. Ages 5-12, you have one teacher per grade, and they teach basics of geometry, math, sciences, history, ect. But once you reach 6th grade, around 13, you have 6 or seven (depending on the school), in which you have a list of mandatory classes consisting of Physical Education, Math, Reading, History, and Sciences. This goes on for 3 school years. When you enter High School you have same amount of classes, but the your scheduled is up to you. To graduate High School, you must complete a number of required classes, which teach Math, Language, and Sciences, but these can vary on difficulty based on what your skill level is. Here is a list of my classes this year- AP= Advanced Placement (Highest difficulty you can take other than University courses). Honors= Above average difficulty. AP Math AP US history Honors Language French 2 Phycology Economics Business (Financial Literacy) The school year is broken in 3 or four section (varying on school), some of the classes overlap into the next section, because they take longer to master. The foreign language section is poor. I have take a total of 4 years, 2 in French and 2 in Spanish, and am taking my 3rd year of French now. You may choose to take a foreign language, but the choice of what to learn depends on whether you have someone teaching that language. (i.e. some schools may have a Japanese teachers, others a German). The American school system is designed to rule out the weak and those who will not learn. They give equal opportunity to students coming in, and allow the student to choose whether to work hard or not. This system lets the hardworking minority to become successful in later life, while the majority works the labor and low tier jobs.

Let me say something. The curriculum in the USA and Russia are NOT similar. Like, at all. I went to first and second grade in Russia and learned pre-algebra, complex equations, etc. When I came to the USA and started third grade, they were STILL learning their MULTIPLICATION TABLES. I was like wtf I already learned this in the first month of first grade. I only started learning new things in about 7th grade. So basically, Russian kids learn in 1st and second grade what Americans learn in 7 years of school. Let me tell you, Russian schools are really advanced and produce smart kids.

Alise, I must say that as an American who is interested in learning more about Russia (while trying to avoid any lies the media bombards us with), what you said there in your post was an absolute eye-opener. You are absolutely right about our third grade math education, and over here, they won't teach you pre-algebra, etc. until 7th or 8th grade. And yet many of us wonder why people around the world look down on Americans. I think it's time for more Americans to wake up and see things for what they really are when it comes to our education system vs. the education system of countries like Russia.

Kit Carson LOL I went through Russian schools between grade 1 and 5. Trust if anything its Americans who don't know geography. In Russia geography is basic education I was learning the same shit in US we learned in 2nd and 3rd grade geography in Russia. America emphasis on geography would be the last topic you would compare to Russia. Either your aiming hard or your pulling shit out your ass, but you're dead wrong claiming about superior geography understanding because US is about the worst in that. From experience Russia put way more emphasis on geography in elementary school that even the better side of western Europe your argument is plane laughable.

Do Russian schools teach Roy Medvedev's famous 1989 interview article entitled "The Bitter Truth" found at pages 18-19 of Volume 3 Number 4 of Pravda International magazine, the official organ of both the USSR and the CPSU? This article describes how Stalin and his government repressed and murdered 40 million innocent people including 10 million Ukrainians. Any education system in Russia that ignores this and other fruits of glasnost is useless and dangerous.

Vladimir Tarasov Why would Pravda International publish Soviet legislator Medvedev's article in 1989 if it wasn't the truth? Isn't that what Pravda means? Many westerners know more about Russia than your grandparents who lived on a steady diet of Soviet lies for decades. Historian Alec Nove spent his entire life studying the economy of the Soviet Union. In the fourth edition of his book entitled "An Economic History of the USSR" he announced he was no longer studying the Economic History of the USSR because the great mass of economic data he studied was false and distorted to hide decades of Soviet stupidity and bungling. How much of this did your grandparent's know about? Did they know about the famous super advanced Soviet N-1 rockets engines that the Politburo wanted to make into pig sties but Soviet engineers hid for 22 years until they could sell them to the Americans who were amazed at how well they worked and used them to launch American satellites into orbit?

I played the King in a production of Cinderella, and was sad that they cut this song for our version, because it's so beautiful, but they decided to give the song, "Do I Love you Because your Beautiful" to the King after changing the lyrics around to "Do you Love Her Because She's Beautiful", It was more a song about the King questioning his son about the girl he barely knows.

@iluvmusic114 It doesn't fit well because it was originally written for "Meet Me in St. Louis" but didn't fit well since the rest of the film was written by someone else. They shelved it and stuck it into Cinderella later. It's a lovely song, though!
